Fraud Prevention Month March 2024

March is International Fraud Prevention Month. This year’s theme, "20 years of fighting fraud: From then to now" will help Canadians recognize how fraud has evolved over the years, from telemarketing and mail to social media and Artificial Intelligence.  Here are some quick tips to keep in mind:

    • Stay Informed: Knowledge is your best defense. Stay updated on the latest scams and fraud tactics circulating in your area and online.
    • Guard Personal Information: Be cautious about sharing personal or financial information online, over the phone, or through email unless you initiated the contact and are sure of the recipient's identity.
    • Verify Requests: If someone contacts you claiming to be from a legitimate organization or business, verify their identity independently before sharing any sensitive information or making any payments.
    • Secure Your Devices: Keep your devices updated with the latest security patches and use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts. Be wary of public Wi-Fi networks and use a VPN when accessing sensitive information.
    • Think Before You Click: Be cautious of unexpected emails, messages, or links, especially if they urge you to act urgently or offer deals that seem too good to be true. Phishing scams are rampant, so always double-check before clicking.
    • Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off or too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your instincts and take a moment to pause and verify before proceeding.
    • Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter any suspicious activity or believe you've been targeted by a scam, report it to the appropriate authorities immediately. Your vigilance could prevent others from becoming victims too.
